Participants attending the training and tour of the Universal Design Living Laboratory will learn the philosophy of affordable universal design for single and multifamily housing development.

Attendees will discover how to create accommodating design features that can be integrated into the overall design of an affordable home, resulting in a product that is usable by people with diverse abilities and is appealing and marketable to a wide audience.

Through this training and tour, participants will:

  • Identify good design solutions that provide independence for homebuyers with multiple needs and abilities;
  • Recognize the essential universal design components in kitchen and bathrooms;
  • Identify product features that support the principals of universal design;
  • Learn how space planning impacts access to areas of the home and define the following terms: universal design, accessible design, adaptable design, aging in place and visitability.

There will be a tour of the universal design living laboratory where attendees can see first-hand what went into the construction process as well as the products selected to qualify the home as the top-rated universal design home in North America.

Attendees will tour and identify smart design solutions that provide independence, access, comfort, convenience and safety.
