Food swap sparks local food economy in Youngstown

On March 15th, Common Wealth, Inc. in Youngstown, OH hosted their annual Food Swap event.

In this event, people bring food and other goods that they have made or grown themselves and trade for goods brought by another person. About 20 people brought their home-made and home-grown foods to swap. There was no buying or selling of goods – only trading.

OCDCA AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Sarah Wilhelm, helps with the planning and capacity building of this event. “We are really trying to encourage people to make local food, make things here, maybe even source their ingredients locally,” said Sarah Wilhelm, Food Swap organizer.

The second Lake-to-River Food Swap will be held Sunday, May 3rd at 2pm in the Elm Street Café.
